Eurovision Song Contest

Let’s kick this off with the German 1979 entry

The fun of watching completely deranged dancing, swirling Germans dressed up as ancient Mongolian dictators notwithstanding, what is it about this annual song contest that is so appealing – at least to us Europeans?

To be fair, the above song and dance is 30 years old. Surely, matters have improved over the years.

Nope…

Okay, the music is better – at least to me, it is – but the costumes have become much, much worse.

This was two extreme examples, I realize that, but the fact remains that the contest is an amazing spectable, completely devoid of anything resembling taste.

An American blogger on the NY times has written this utterly entertaining yet rather harsh article on the contest. Read it – it is well worth it. And do also view the select videos of some of this year’s performers. It is well worth half an hour of your time…
